free-er

From weakness I came,

Held down in my shame,

I could barely lift my head.

Alone in the dust,

My spirit was crushed,

My hopes for freedom were dead.

The tears wouldn’t come,

My heart was too numb,

Silence was all that I had.

I forgot how to yearn,

With nowhere to turn,

So there, at your feet, I just sat.

But you knelt beside me,

Showed my heart how to grieve,

You loosed the tears that were trapped.

I cried and I cried,

As I felt things inside,

While you held me tight in your lap.

As I leaned on your chest,

You told me to rest,

But resting made me feel much weaker.

You said I must learn,

How to hope, how to yearn,

And that you would be my great teacher.

So I’ll stay on my knees,

Until hope has been freed,

With you is where I will find it.

When I start to feel fear,

I’ll remember you’re here,

I will let you grab hold and bind it.

With you I will stay,

As you show me the way,

For you are a good, gentle leader.

I will follow your steps,

Into life and through death,

And with each step I know I’ll be free-er.
