how to make a wreath out of vines
I have been making vine wreaths since I was a kid. It’s so easy and completely free! Don’t you just love a good craft that is easy and free? These wreaths can be left in all of their natural viney glory or can have dried flowers, fresh foliage, ribbons, or all kinds of things added to them to spruce them up for any holiday or occasion. They last forever and can be made in just a few minutes.
I use muscadine grape vines but you can use any vine that has a good bend to it and dries nice and firm. There are some vines in my yard that break and crack instead of bend or their bark peels off too easily or they have thorns. These vines would not make a good wreath.
There are a few different looks to the vine wreaths depending on the thickness of vines you choose or how many you use. The vines are best when used fresh. So pull them down and start forming your circle. No need to soak in water, just get straight to it.
Start in the middle of your vine. Shape it into a circle the size of your desired wreath size. You may have to give your circle a bit of a squeeze or a pull depending on the natural shape it forms. You will be able to get a circular shape as you begin to wrap.
Once you have your circle, choose the thicker side of your vine (the end closer to the root). This half of your vine will likely have less branches attached to it and will form a good base for your wreath.
Once you’ve finished wrapping the first half of your vine, begin wrapping the second half around your circle. Be sure to continue to shape your circle as you go. As you wrap the second half, you will come across smaller branches. you can choose to do one branch at a time or just wrap them all together.
When you’ve wrapped all of the branches, make sure all the ends have been tucked in. Take a step back and see how everything turned out. If you want to thicken up your wreath, add another vine or two. Simply begin wrapping a second vine in the same way you started with the first.
Begin with the middle of your second vine and start wrapping the thicker side of the vine. Then follow with the thinner half of the vine and wrap each branch until you get to your desired look.
Add some fresh greenery, some dried flowers, ribbons, bells or anything to fit whatever season.
